Magnetic fusion is nowadays an important topic of research with the construction of ITER in Cadarache (France). The succes of ITER will depend on many scientific and technological breakthroughs which rely heavily on numerical simulations requiring to solve extremely complex numerical problems. The aim of the summer school of the INRIA large scale initiative "Fusion" will be to bring together physicists, applied mathematicians and computer scientists to underly the main physical problems which remain complex or source of many open problems.
The following main topics are included :
mathematical study of approximate models for magnetized plasma
gyrokinetic simulation of turbulence in the plasma core
development of a fluid code for the simulation of edge plasma electrostatic turbulence
development of novel numerical techniques for large scale simulation of plasma turbulence
identification and control of plasma equilibria
materials and plasma-wall interaction
development of visualization tools and steering of ITER simulations
