Jean Pierre Wintenberger reçoit le Frank Nelson Cole Prize de l’AMS

L’American Mathematical Society publiait le 6 janvier dernier l’annonce suivante :

"Khare and Wintenberger Receive 2011 Cole Prize in Number Theory

Chandrashekhar Khare, professor of mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Jean-Pierre Wintenberger, professor of mathematics at the University of Strasbourg, have jointly receivedthe 2011 AMS Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Number Theory. Presented every three years by the American Mathematical Society, the Cole Prize recognizes an outstanding research paper in number theory that has appeared in the preceding six years. The prize was awarded on January 7, 2011, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in New Orleans.

Khare and Wintenberger are honored "for their remarkable proof of Serre’s modularity conjecture," the prize citation states. This conjecture, proposed in 1973 by Fields Medalist Jean-Pierre Serre, has had an important impact in number theory. In particular, in the mid-1980s, Gerhard Frey and Serre realized that the conjecture implies Fermat’s Last Theorem, the landmark problem that was solved by Andrew Wiles in the 1990s. In fact, Wiles used ideas relating to Serre’s conjecture to prove Fermat’s Last Theorem, but at that time the conjecture seemed completely out of reach. In 2004 Khare and Wintenberger stunned the mathematical community when for the first time they found a plausible, and extremely beautiful, strategy to attack Serre’s conjecture."
